So you’ve signed up for Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, what now?
Mentions
In Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram you can “mention” ECE by using the at sign (@) followed by the appropriate username:
- On Twitter – @NCStateECE
- On Facebook – @NCStateECE
- On Instagram – @NCStateECE
You can also mention the following on Twitter:
- NC State – @NCState
- College of Engineering – @NCStateEngr
- FREEDM Center – @FREEDMerc
- ASSIST Center – @ASSISTCenter
- PowerAmerica – @poweramer
On Facebook, it’ll prompt you to select the appropriate Page, which you must click to enable the mention to work.

So, why mention? It’s an excellent way to draw attention to ECE, lets us know you’re talking about us and enable us to help promote whatever you’re talking about. It also allows anyone reading your post to click on the mention and be taken to our ECE profile, helping us promote our department.
Hashtags

On Twitter, Instagram, and to a lesser-extent, Facebook, you can “hashtag” a topic, idea, place, or entity. This allows for posts to be easily seen by anyone interested in the particular topic you’ve hash tagged, and is a valuable tool for sorting communication and for getting those posts seen by people outside your direct following.
Hashtags also bear importance during particular events, such as Senior Design Day, allowing for one to see all posts about that event. For example, if you post photos on Instagram at Senior Design Day, and hashtag them appropriately, we can feature those photos as part of the Memories slideshow at Graduation.
The following are examples of hashtags promoted by ECE for particular topics/events:
- #NCStateECE – used for general ECE-related posts
Other typical hashtags include:
- #NCState – for general NC State posts, may be promoted by NC State communications
- #ThinkAndDo – current slogan for NC State, promoted by NC State communications
- #NCState20 – for Class of 2020, and same pattern for other class years. While this is typically used by students (or alumni) posting, it can also be used when promoting something specific to that class year or to incoming students.
Social Media Guidelines
- The Purpose
- Usage of social media personally or when posting as the Department requires adherence to similar fundamentals.
- The same principles and guidelines that apply to employees in general, apply to activities online. However, due to the nature of the Internet, more accountability is to be expected.
- Social media is largely about connecting, helping others, and having fun.
- Social media is also a valuable resource to learn and to contribute.
- Social media is more than just Facebook and Twitter. It includes blogs, online networks, and any other Internet-based tools for sharing and discussing information.
- Expectations
- Be helpful and supportive in all social media engagements
- Be respectful to all entities and individuals in NC State, and even competitors. (This includes past, present, and potential students, faculty, and staff.)
- Each individual is responsible for what they post online, even while not at work.
- When posting on a departmental account, you are posting as the department and your opinions, politics, and background should not be communicated or involved.
- Be Respectful & Kind
- You are encouraged to share your insights, express your opinion, and share information as appropriate, especially when it is helpful to others.
- Try to add value to what others are doing and saying.
- Please post knowledgeably, accurately, and use appropriate professionalism.
- Be quick to correct your own mistakes and admit when you are wrong.
- Do not use ethnic slurs, insults, obscenities, etc. Slang should be avoided unless you are certain of the etymology of the phrase.
- Do not engage in conduct that would not be acceptable behavior in the University.
- Recall that you are representing an entity of the State, and should therefore avoid religion or politics.
- Any form of political engagement should only be used in following the lead of University Communications.
- Do not pick fights.
- Identity
- Please be smart about protecting yourself and your privacy online.
- Your online presence reflects the department and the University. Be aware that your actions captured via images, videos, posts, or comments can reflect that of the University.
- Unless given express permission, you should not speak on behalf of the department or University from a personal account.
- When appropriate while posting personally, please direct others to the official website and social media accounts of the department.

- We believe in good communication between employees, partners, students, and the general public.
- Never reveal any confidential and/or proprietary information.
