Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Science & Engineering!

Want to be a POET this Summer 2020?

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Science & Engineering
Application Deadline:  February 15th, 2020

Welcome to the NSF Engineering Research Center on Power Optimization for Electro Thermal Systems (POETS) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) 2019 program. This exciting summer program is now accepting applications for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience in conducting original research and apply it to cutting edge applications. This 10 week program is a collaboration of Howard University, Stanford University, The University of Arkansas and The University of Illinois. Accepted students will have the opportunity to engage in research over the summer at one of these four institutions and receive a $5,000 stipend.

The POETS research focus is on increasing power density for electrified mobile systems. Examples would be higher power to weight ratios for electrified powertrains in electric vehicles. The topics span multiple disciplines and encompass Thermal System, Power Electronics, Materials Science, Electrical Device Fabrication, among others.  Details on the university faculty involved with the POETS REU can be found at http://poets-erc.org/sample-page/people/

Students work in a university research lab on a project related to power dense electrified systems along with a faculty advisor and graduate student mentor with expertise in the field. Projects may involve studies of technical literature and reports, computer-aided design, mathematical modeling, fabrication designs, experimental testing, group discussions and team meetings. Every student has a project of their own with specific responsibilities and deliverables. At the end of the summer, every student creates a scientific poster, paper or project report. In addition, students participate in POETS webinars and social activities with other REU students.

The deadline for full consideration is February 15th, 2020; applications received after this date may be considered if space permits.
