ECE Audit Course Procedure

Overview

Undergraduate students wishing to audit a course before or after taking it for credit must have approval of their advisor and of the department offering the course. Auditors are expected to attend class regularly. The degree to which an auditor must participate in class beyond regular attendance is at the discretion of the instructor; any such requirements should be clearly explained in writing to the auditor at the beginning of the semester. Students who have taken a course for audit may, with their advisor’s approval, enroll in the course for credit during a subsequent semester or summer session.

For tuition cost purposes, audits are treated at full credit value; the fee to audit a course is the same as if the course was taken for credit. For all other purposes, however, audits will not be counted in calculating undergraduate course loads.

Upon completion of audited course, students will:

  • Not receive course credit,
  • No letter grade is awarded for the course,
  • Audited courses do not count as a prerequisite for a future class,
  • Audited courses do not count in your GPA

You can refer to the University Regulation if needed: REG 02.20.04.

Approval

Consult your assigned ECE academic advisor with your interest in auditing a course. If the course is approved for audit, you will need to receive instructor approval.

Auditing undergraduate ECE courses is only available for 300-level and 400-level courses on a case-by-case basis. To be approved to audit a course, you will need (1) advisor approval,(2) open seats in the class after the first day of classes in the term you wish to audit the course, (3) instructor approval, (4) completion of the Audit Request Form. ECE courses at the 100-level and 200-level are not approved for audit.

Changing your grading basis to “audit” after the Census Date will not be approved by the department.

Timeline

After the first day of class, if multiple seats are still available in an ECE course at the 300-level or 400-level, you can begin the auditing approval process for that term. You cannot seek auditing approval for a future term as we need to see how many seats are left in the class prior to providing advisor approval.
