Many existing materials also exhibit complex electronic structures that interfere with the full expression of quantum phenomena. Dr. Milena Jovanovic's research addresses these challenges by combining chemistry, materials science, and machine learning to design new quantum materials. Her approach explores delocalized bonding to create materials with cleaner electronic structures and investigates how light can be used to engineer quantum materials under standard conditions. This work could pave the way for more practical applications of quantum technologies. 👩‍🏫 Speaker: Dr. Milena Jovanovic, Assistant Professor at NC State, earned her Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Colorado Boulder and conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University. While conventional data compression methods assume weak dependencies between symbols, graph structures introduce complex relationships that render these methods suboptimal. Dr. Justin P. Coon will provide an introduction to graph compression, discussing key challenges, practical solutions, and information-theoretic limits. The seminar will explore emerging methods for compressing graphs, highlighting their applications in large-scale data analysis and network modeling. Dr. Coon will also discuss the fundamental constraints that govern how efficiently graphs can be compressed while preserving essential structural properties. 👨‍🏫 Speaker: Dr. Justin P. Coon, Professor of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. Dr. Coon received his Ph.D. in communications from the University of Bristol and has held research leadership positions at Toshiba Research Europe Ltd. His contributions to physical layer communications and network modeling have earned him multiple awards, including Toshiba’s Distinguished Research Award. This talk will explore integration trends at the package, magnetic, topology, control, and system levels, as well as potential applications beyond EVs. Speaker Bio: Zhu received his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2020 and 2022. He is currently a faculty member at Virginia Tech’s Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) and specializes in WBG-based DC/DC converters, magnetic components, auxiliary power modules, and integrated EV chargers. He holds over 15 patents and has received multiple prestigious awards, including the IEEE Transaction on Transportation Electrification second prize paper award and the IEEE International Future Energy Challenge grand prize.
