Students of Concern
There are resources available when assisting students of concern in and out of the classroom. Many of these are collected as part of our office’s website. As always, our goal is to maintain the best level of support for students – one that reflects the culture of care that exists here at NC State. For this reason, we ask that everyone “lend a paw” and show they care.
Please share these widely with faculty and staff in your individual areas:
Sharing Concerns about Students in Distress: Our website provides a number of resources as well as a form for submitting concerns. NOTE: For imminent, life-threatening concerns – please call campus police at 911 or 919-515-3000 in addition to submitting a referral. For consultation regarding a specific concern, feel free to call us at 919-515-2963.
Syllabus Language: Helpful syllabus (or conversational) language that encourages students to make referrals when they notice behavior that concerns or worries them.
Videos Available Online: Series of short, helpful, and practical videos available on our website. Available 24 hours a day. Topics include:
- Managing Classroom Disruptions
- Responding to Student Concerns over Email
- Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Classroom
- Disability Services Office 101
- Counseling Center 101
One Faculty Member’s Email to Her Students: A great example of how faculty can encourage their students to share concerns they may have for others who need assistance – especially during high stress periods.
Student Confidentiality and FERPA: When is it appropriate to share information or concerns about a student? And who can you share it with?
Other General Resources: Not sure where to refer a student for specific concerns? Our website has collected several common support resources for students in one place.
Faculty FAQ: Still have questions? We have a site for that too.
