Surplus

SURPLUS

Unwanted items or items for surplus should not be placed in the hallways or basement. Please coordinate their disposal with ECE IT & Operations by emailing ecehelp@ncsu.edu. Please include a photo of the item(s) so we know what we’re looking for.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries must be managed carefully when entering the waste stream due to fire risk, explosion, and safety concerns.
If a lithium-ion battery is not damaged and shows no signs of swelling, leaking, overheating, or smoke:

How to dispose:

  1. Tape the battery terminals using electrical tape to prevent short-circuiting.
  2. Place inside closable plastic bag.
  3. Place the battery in a yellow e-waste cart located across campus.
For disposal instructions, contact ecehelp@ncsu.edu or EH&S:

Note: Large/excessively heavy/bulky lithium ion batteries can be taken directly to WRR’s Dearstyne Convenience Site or disposed of by contacting ecehelp@ncsu.edu. DO NOT dispose of lithium ion batteries in landfill and/or blue recycling bins!

Damaged lithium-ion batteries require special handling and must NOT be placed in e-waste carts.

  • Examples of damage may include:
    • Bulging or swelling
    • Cracking, punctures, or leaks
    • Hissing, smoking, overheating, or unusual odors.

RECYCLING

E-WASTE, or Electronic Waste, including discarded, broken or obsolete electrical devices and cords can be disposed of in our yellow e-waste bin located at the loading dock.

CARDBOARD BOXES, including Amazon boxes, MUST be broken down and left beside/behind a recycling bin in the hallway or Housekeeping will not take them. Extra paper and small amounts of bubble wrap can go inside the large trash bins in the hallway. This does not include pallets, crates, or styrofoam.

PALLETS, CRATES AND BULK PACKING MATERIAL, such as packing peanuts, styrofoam, and large sheets of bubble wrap must be taken to the dumpster by the loading dock. Housekeeping does not remove these from the building. Packing material goes inside the dumpster; pallets go beside the dumpster.

The recycling crew does pickup as many as five standard sized pallets per week for diversion purposes.Ā  The pallets need to be stacked neatly outside, nails removed or hammered flat, and left near the loading dock. If you’re planning to have a lot of material and/or palletsĀ to discard, you will need to request a rolloff, rather than piling the pallets on the ground or leaving them inside the loading dock.Ā This can be done by emailing ecehelp@ncsu.edu. EquipmentĀ Services can remove oversized pallets and crate materialĀ for a fee, or those items can be taken to Dearstyne convenience center for no charge.Ā Ā
