Academic Advisors

After applicants receive an offer of admission into one of our graduate programs, they will be assigned an Academic Advisor. You can see your Interim Advisor assignment in GradWatch in the Application tab. Your Academic Advisor can help with questions about coursework, specialty areas or planning which courses to take to satisfy degree requirements.

PhD
All PhD students have been assigned an Interim Advisor. When you are ready to begin PhD research, talk to faculty to ask about potential research projects.

MS-EE and MS-CPE
Dr. Ginger Yu (dgyu@ncsu.edu) is the academic advisor for all MS-Electrical Engineering (EE) and MS-Computer Engineering (CPE) students.

MS-CNE
Dr. Mihail Sichitiu (mlsichit@ncsu.edu) is the program coordinator and academic advisor for MS-Computer Neworking (CNE) students.

MS-EPSE
Dr. Mesut Baran (baran@ncsu.edu) is the Program Director and academic advisor for all MS-Electric Power Systems Engineering (EPSE) students.

Master’s students: The Master of Science degree may be earned through either of two options: the MS with thesis or MS without thesis. All MS students are admitted as non-thesis students for the first semester. Students interested in pursuing a MS Thesis should review the ECE Research webpage and contact faculty members directly to discuss possible MS research projects. Students planning to continue toward a PhD should meet with their advisor to discuss which option best meets their objectives. For more information on the requirements for each degree program, review the Graduate Degrees webpage.

Master’s Thesis students will consult with the above advisors for the first semester. You are responsible for selecting an ECE graduate faculty member who will agree to serve as your academic advisor, committee chair and to direct your thesis research. We suggest that you take courses your first semester, become familiar with the faculty, then approach a professor in your area of interest as to their willingness to supervise your research. Your advisory committee will consist of 3 graduate faculty members, and should be formed by the end of the semester in which 18 credits are completed toward the degree. If the advisor/chair becomes unable or unwilling to direct the work to completion and no suitable replacement is found, the student must pursue the Non-Thesis MS program option.

PhD students are assigned an interim advisor upon acceptance into the doctoral program. You can retain your interim advisor as your permanent academic advisor/committee chair or you may select an ECE graduate faculty member who will agree to serve as academic advisor, committee chair and direct your dissertation research. Your advisory committee must consist of at least 4 graduate faculty members, one of whom serves as Chair of the committee. One committee member must be from a non-ECE Department (outside member). A Graduate School Representative (GSR) is required. You outside member may serve as the GSR. Your committee should be formed before the end of your fourth semester of enrollment.
