Yu has developed various AI systems that have had a real impact, including winning the Amazon Alexa Prize. This presentation introduces the fundamental principles of grid-forming control, explains how GFM inverters establish and regulate system voltage and frequency, and highlights the key differences between GFM and conventional grid-following (GFL) technologies. The presentation also discusses practical approaches for validating GFM functionality through dynamic simulation studies and performance testing. Drawing from real-world project experience with grid-forming battery energy storage systems (BESS), it examines common model validation challenges, including controller tuning, verification of frequency and voltage response, fault ride-through performance, and compliance with evolving utility and reliability requirements. The design of these materials is often cast as a challenging inverse problem, where a desired electromagnetic response is sought. We present an agentic framework that automates the complete end-to-end workflow of metamaterial inverse design, a scope that includes the development of the forward model itself. When prompted with a desired optical spectrum, the agent autonomously plans the research process, develops a custom deep learning forward model, accesses external simulation tools, and generates a final optimized geometry using an inverse method.
