{"id":1382,"date":"2020-02-11T16:01:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T20:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ece.ncsu.edu\/?p=236157"},"modified":"2020-02-11T16:01:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T20:01:15","slug":"driverless-shuttle-a-smart-move-for-centennial-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/my.ece.ncsu.edu\/communications\/2020\/driverless-shuttle-a-smart-move-for-centennial-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Driverless Shuttle a Smart Move for Centennial Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ece.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/casii-1500-1-1024x576.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ece.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/casii-1500-1-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/ece.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/casii-1500-1-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It looks like a giant branded sugar cube, rolling on a continuous predetermined loop on NC State\u2019s Partners Way, Varsity Drive and Main Campus Drive \u2014 all without a driver.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what the Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation (CASSI) is: an innovative research partnership between NC State and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to launch the state\u2019s first autonomous vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a six-month pilot program that will use a specified route on Centennial Campus as a field lab for the autonomous electric vehicle, which was built by French transportation manufacturer EasyMile and operated by Free2Move. The EasyMile\u2019s EZ-10 is the world\u2019s most deployed driverless shuttle, can hold up to 12 passengers and completes its one-mile route in about 12 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, NC State chancellor Randy Woodson and North Carolina Secretary of Transportation James H. Trogdon III will take the inaugural ride on CASSI, boarding just in front of Hunt Library. After invited guests and media have their turn, CASSI will open its doors to the public all day Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>By federal law, there is an operator on board \u2014 but that CASSI ambassador is mostly there to provide answers to the many questions riders might have. Such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CASSI uses cameras, radar, global positioning systems and electronic sensors to navigate its preset operating domain. There is no steering wheel, brake pedal or rear-view mirror.<\/li>\n<li> Rated by the Society of Automated Engineers as a Level-4 automated vehicle, CASSI is programmed to handle the majority of all driving situations within its specified operating environment.<\/li>\n<li> Not only does it have state-of-the-art guidance technology, it has an automated wheelchair ramp, superior battery life, heating and air conditioning.<\/li>\n<li> CASSI\u2019s normal schedule will be Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., except on holidays.<\/li>\n<li> The vehicle will be on NC State\u2019s campus through August, as the NCDOT begins taking applications from others around the state for its next round of testing.<\/li>\n<li> When not operational, CASSI is docked at a recharging station on Centennial Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To learn more about CASSI, visit NC State Transportation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/transportation.ncsu.edu\/cassi\/\">frequently asked questions page<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/stop-casii-1500-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"CASSI at a stop sign.\" class=\"wp-image-500309\" \/><figcaption>CASSI features an automated wheelchair ramp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;As a research campus and innovation center, NC State&#8217;s Centennial Campus is the most appropriate place to launch North Carolina&#8217;s first autonomous vehicle,&#8221; says NC State Transportation Assistant Director for Planning and Operations Mike Kennon. &#8220;It adds value for our students, staff and faculty, as well as corporate and private partners, while also allowing the NCDOT the opportunity to do important research on an advancing technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Above all, CASSI is a research project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are focused on understanding how future technologies are impacting our infrastructure and our transportation network,\u201d says Julie White, NCDOT\u2019s deputy secretary of multimodal transportation. \u201cWe also want to know more about how autonomous vehicles will interact with our existing infrastructure, such as signal interaction, curb height and rider use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity to see all those things in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/interior-casii-1500-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of CASSI.\" class=\"wp-image-500310\" \/><figcaption>CASSI uses cameras, radar, global positioning systems and electronic sensors to navigate. It has no steering wheel or brake pedal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NC State, and other college campuses, are great research labs because of the frequent use of multiple modes of transportation interacting with pedestrian traffic, White says.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle is designed to be a first- and last-mile solution for commuters and those with mobility challenges, says EasyMile Senior Vice President of North American Operations Sharad Agarwal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, that last-mile challenge is the biggest one we face in transportation, because \u2014  even though it\u2019s a short distance \u2014 it is still the reason most people do not use public transportation,\u201d Agarwal says. \u201cThe cost of staff people for other solutions is expensive, so we think, where feasible, an autonomous vehicle makes more sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity for us to test our technology that will ultimately be on larger vehicles with more capacity in the next few years. This is technology that will eventually be in all motor vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CASSI also will be equipped with AERPAW technology, as part of NC State\u2019s $24 million National Science Foundation grant <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2019\/09\/mobile-5g-wireless-networks\/https:\/news.ncsu.edu\/2019\/09\/mobile-5g-wireless-networks\/\">to create a more flexible and adaptable 5G network<\/a>.
