Some are managed by the department, some by the College of Engineering, and others by OIT. WordPress is a free and open-source&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Content_management_system\" target=\"_blank\">content management system&nbsp;<\/a>that powers over 33% of the web. The easy-to-use editor enables you to create and manage your own content quickly and effectively directly from your web browser. WordPress also offers an extensive selection of plugins and themes for you to achieve the look, feel, and functionality you need. Department hosting comes with the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The site&#8217;s address will be research.ece.ncsu.edu\/<strong>labname<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The site will be running WordPress, and <strong>centrally managed<\/strong> by the ECE web team for maintenance, security, and compliance. However, the <strong>content<\/strong> is the responsibility of the faculty member\/lab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The site will be required to use the <strong>NC State v.4 Theme<\/strong>, which is the current campus standard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The site is on shared hosting with other research and departmental sites, so the requestor has no access beyond WordPress itself\u2014e.g.: no FTP, SSH, etc. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conferenceacademic-sites-ff5c8595-105c-4cae-9e5e-4be3e81ae704\">Conference\/Academic Sites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Available to faculty and staff members upon request, the College of Engineering WordPress environment is a managed environment, designed to provide flexibility and security to users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College does not typically provide a URL for these sites, you will have to purchase your own domain name (ideally a .org, often available for less than $15\/yr) and provide that information in the request form. <strong>Contact ecehelp@ncsu.edu prior to purchasing any domain name, as they must be approved for use on any NC State hosting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"personaleveryone-d0bd1967-5dec-4b98-9dd7-c4ecbfea33c1\">Personal\/Everyone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NC State offers two easy-to-use services for personal websites \u2014&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/new\" target=\"_blank\">Google Sites<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">NC State WordPress<\/a>. Note that the NC State WordPress service is distinct from what the department offers for research\/lab sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"branding-guidelines-4c194d7d-9dfb-454e-ab2e-b0846ec47095\">Branding Guidelines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any website created for&nbsp;<strong>official university communications<\/strong>&nbsp;is required to follow&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/brand.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">branding guidelines<\/a>&nbsp;published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Communications<\/a>, including the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use an NC State-branded theme. (<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.ncsu.edu\/support\/video-tutorials\/switching-themes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about switching\u00a0themes in WordPress.<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow university\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brand.ncsu.edu\/editorial-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editorial style guidelines<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write with a\u00a0consistent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brand.ncsu.edu\/voice-and-tone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voice and tone<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brand.ncsu.edu\/imagery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bold and impactful imagery<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"accessibility-requirements-1094d0ed-eddf-41df-887b-803c2583813a\">Accessibility Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NC State University is committed to providing a barrier-free IT environment to all people. WordPress is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/accessibility.oit.ncsu.edu\/profiles\/wordpress.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommended technology<\/a>&nbsp;for creating accessible websites. However, you must still follow basic accessibility best practices as you create content, including the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every post and page must have a title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use headings to denote sections of your posts and pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add alternative text for images when adding them to posts and pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The university IT Accessibility Coordinator periodically leads workshops on WordPress and accessibility. You can&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/go.ncsu.edu\/learnIT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn more and register for the next available workshop in REPORTER<\/a>. For additional information,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.ncsu.edu\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact OIT Design &amp; Web Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"learning-to-use-wordpress-05473ae1-869b-4444-bb04-d32641cc3483\">Learning to Use WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several resources available for learning how to use WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WordPress Codex is \u201cthe online manual for WordPress and a living repository for WordPress information and documentation.\u201d The Codex has extensive information for all aspects of WordPress, including getting started guides, best practices for content editing, as well as developer resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WordPress.org offers a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\">knowledge base<\/a>, which contains all kinds of information ranging from how to author posts, to what the user roles and permissions are.
