{"id":124,"date":"2018-08-18T01:15:06","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T05:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.ece.ncsu.edu\/myece\/communications\/?page_id=124"},"modified":"2026-04-10T20:20:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T00:20:28","slug":"faqs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/my.ece.ncsu.edu\/communications\/faqs\/","title":{"rendered":"FAQs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-text wp-block-ncst-accordion\" >\n    <div class=\"accordion isLinked\" id=\"ncst-accordion-tqs1gd\">\n          \n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item\" name=\"tqs1gd\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n        <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">NC\u00a0State vs. NCSU<br><\/h2>\n      <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How should I address the University?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In general usage, the recommended naming is \u201cNC State University.\u201d Other options can be \u201cNC State,\u201d or \u201cNorth Carolina State University.\u201d The official full name of \u201cNorth Carolina State University at Raleigh\u201d is to be avoided, due to the implication that there\u2019s another NC State somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I use \u201cNCSU\u201d?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Under no circumstances, with the exception of a url (ncsu.edu) should \u201cNCSU\u201d be used, either internally or publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why not?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the 2000s, NC State did some market research on the name recognition of \u201cNCSU\u201d vs. \u201cNC State.\u201d What we discovered was that \u201cNC State\u201d had good name recognition across the country, but \u201cNCSU\u201d was not well-known or well-understood outside the South. At the time, we were trying to strengthen our brand by paring down the multitude of ways you could refer to the university, so that was the origin of our decision to save \u201cNorth Carolina State University\u201d for super-formal occasions, like commencement and Founders\u2019 Day, because it\u2019s the most cumbersome of our names; to call ourselves \u201cNC State\u201d or \u201cNC State University\u201d the vast majority of the time;&nbsp;and to eliminate \u201cNCSU\u201d altogether as the weakest form of our name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why NCSU is never to be used in any communications intended for any public audience, whether internal or external. To make sure members of our community get in the habit of using on-brand terminology, we prefer that people refrain from using NCSU even in&nbsp;emails within the university or on platforms like Slack. Besides, once it\u2019s on the internet in any form, there\u2019s no telling who may eventually see it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item\" name=\"tqs1gd\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n        <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">Department and Corporate Logos<\/h2>\n      <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What logo should I use for the department?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The department\u2019s official logotype is the University Brick, flanked on the right by the text \u201cElectrical and Computer Engineering\u201d. The official variants of that are available at go.ncsu.edu\/ece-brand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I use the old diode ECE logo?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I just recreate the NC State brick logo or the ECE logo myself?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No. The spacing, coloring, and fonts used are all part of the official brand and should never be adjusted\/changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What logo can I use for the University?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to brand.ncsu.edu\/logo to see and download all the options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the \u201cblock S\u201d logo is not to be used by academic units \u2013 it\u2019s reserved for student\/alumni spirit and athletics. Similarly, the chancellor\u2019s seal (with the Bell Tower) is only allowed for official communications from the Chancellor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My group is sponsored or working with another company, can we use their logo in print or on the web?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You must ensure that you have explicit permission from the company to use their logo \u2013 just because you may be working with them or using their product does not imply consent to use their logo on any University communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I use the Department Logo on merchandise (like a shirt or cup)?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Department Logo includes the University\u2019s trademark, it is subject to royalties, and can only be produced by licensed manufacturers. See Trademark Licensing for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Notes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Licenses of the official font (Univers) are limited to official communication roles. If you do not have Univers, you should be using Arial as the font in any official\/departmental use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official colors are available at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/brand.ncsu.edu\/color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand.ncsu.edu\/color<\/a>&nbsp;and should always be used exclusively and specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cCircuit Wolf\u201d which is used on Department social media is not an official logo and should not be used in place of the official logotype. In the \u201cEdit Link\u201d box that appears, paste the URL for the channel the icon represents into the \u201cWeb address\u201d field and click \u201cOK.\u201d Do this with each icon in turn, until each icon links to its respective channel. Don\u2019t include the icons in your signature without linking them in this way. You\u2019re not alone, and no, it\u2019s typically not legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing the things these agencies want to do is often against the terms of service of Wikipedia, and in the vast majority of cases, you aren\u2019t eligible for a Wikipedia page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Wikipedia is nice, it isn\u2019t a definitive source. Furthermore, the information it would provide on our faculty should already be captured by our profile pages, which we generally want to be at the top of search results anyway\u2013we would much rather get someone looking for John Smith to wind up on the ECE site, and then start clicking away than have them end up on Wikipedia and go down a non-NC State rabbit hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ignoring the administrative challenges of keeping Wikipedia pages updated and accurate (and we do have a few faculty with Wikipedia pages that we occasionally update with honors, etc, and there are probably more updates that can be done (by anyone)), not all (in fact, few) of our faculty meet the criteria for having articles on Wikipedia,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria\">per their published criteria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, any edit made by an employee of the university&nbsp;<em>must<\/em>&nbsp;disclose that it is being done so as an employee (COI disclosure), which would draw further scrutiny and require meticulous external sourcing (e.g.: we can\u2019t really cite the ECE website for everything) of every claim\u2014furthermore, we cannot edit a Wikipedia page as \u201cNC State ECE\u201d, but rather have to edit it as a unique individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The account is yours, not your employer\u2019s.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#LUC\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no service at the university doing Wikipedia maintenance, simply because most folks are not eligible for Wiki pages.&nbsp;<strong>Note that, per their rules, you are also \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Autobiography\">strongly discouraged<\/a>\u201d from creating your own page as that\u2019s a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest\">conflict of interest.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Wikipedia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:When_your_boss_tells_you_to_edit_Wikipedia#:~:text=If%20Wikipedia%20already%20has%20an,implement%20what%20you're%20asking.\">helpfully has a page dedicated to institutional editing\/creating of Wikipedia pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is verbatim from Wikipedia\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria\">criteria for academics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Academics meeting&nbsp;<em>any&nbsp;<strong>one<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;of the following conditions, as substantiated through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources\">reliable sources<\/a>, are notable. Academics meeting none of these conditions&nbsp;<em>may<\/em>&nbsp;still be notable if they meet the conditions of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:BIO\">WP:BIO<\/a>&nbsp;or other notability criteria. The merits of an article on the academic will depend largely on the extent to which it is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Verifiability\">verifiable<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong>Before applying these criteria, see the General notes and Specific criteria notes sections, which follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The person\u2019s research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Academy_of_Sciences_(disambiguation)\">National Academy of Sciences<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Society\">Royal Society<\/a>) or a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fellow\">fellow<\/a>\u00a0of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor (e.g.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fellow_of_the_Institute_of_Electrical_and_Electronics_Engineers\">Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers<\/a>\u00a0or Honorary Fellow of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Institute_of_Physics\">Institute of Physics<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person\u2019s academic work has made a significant impact in the area of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Higher_education\">higher education<\/a>, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has held a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Named_chair\">named chair<\/a>\u00a0appointment or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distinguished_professor\">distinguished professor<\/a>\u00a0appointment at a major institution of higher education and research, or an equivalent position in countries where named chairs are uncommon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has held a highest-level elected or appointed administrative post at a major academic institution or major academic society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has had a substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has been the head or chief editor of a major, well-established academic journal in their subject area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An article\u2019s assertion that the subject passes this guideline is not sufficient. Every topic on Wikipedia must have sources that comply with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Verifiability\">Wikipedia:Verifiability<\/a>. Major awards must be confirmed, claims of impact must be substantiated by independent statements, reviews,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Citation_metrics\">citation metrics<\/a>, or library holdings, and so on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the passage of one or more notability criteria has been verified through independent sources, or through the reliable sources listed explicitly for this purpose in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Specific_criteria_notes\">specific criteria notes<\/a>, non-independent sources, such as official institutional and professional sources, are widely accepted as reliable sourcing for routine, uncontroversial details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The criteria above are sometimes summed up as an \u201cAverage Professor Test\u201d: When judged against the average impact of a researcher in a given field, does this researcher stand out as clearly more notable or more accomplished?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note that this is a\u00a0<strong>guideline<\/strong>\u00a0and not a\u00a0<strong>rule<\/strong>; exceptions may exist. Some academics may not meet any of these criteria, but may still be notable for their academic work. It is very difficult to make clear requirements in terms of number\/quality of publications. The criteria, in practice, vary greatly by field and are determined by precedent and consensus. Also, this guideline sets the bar fairly low, which is natural; to a degree, academics live in the public arena, trying to influence others with their ideas.
